The Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra has opened its 2010 – 2011 (57th Annual) Season,
in its new permanent artistic home at the historic Ebell of Los Angeles.
During the course of LADSO’s Inaugural Season in residence at The Ebell of Los Angeles,
the orchestra will present two concert programs in the Grand Lounge, one on November 12, 2010,
and another on March 20, 2011. The season will culminate with a performance in the
Wilshire Ebell Theatre on Sunday, June 5, 2011.
The Ebell of Los Angeles, erected in 1927 in Hancock Park, CA, is one of the nation’s
oldest and largest women’s clubs. The Ebell of Los Angeles is named after Adrian
Ebell, a German professor who traveled around California forming study groups for
women. It is housed in a 75,000 square foot Italian Renaissance-style complex that
includes a Club Wing, a Theatre Wing, a garden with patios and loggia, an auditorium,
a library, an art salon, a solarium, offices, dressing rooms, public rooms and a
collection of fine furnishings and art. The Ebell of Los Angeles has been administered
by a volunteer board of 15 women since its inception. Now a non-profit 501 (c) 3
organization, its operations are managed by a professional staff under the direction
of a Board of Directors. From the Queen of Romania to the Mayor of Los Angeles,
from Shirley Temple to Amelia Earhart, and from Stevie Wonder to Marianne Faithfull,
the Ebell has opened it doors to royalty and rock stars, playwrights and pundits,
cultural icons and cinema queens, the literati and the glitterati. Shirlee Taylor
Haizlip serves as the current President of the Ebell of Los Angeles.
Ivan Shulman, a General Surgeon by day, who is now beginning his third decade as
LADSO’S Music Director, said: “I can’t imagine a more attractive place to be playing
than at The Ebell of Los Angeles. We’ve been looking for a home for years, and now
we’ve found it.”
Shirlee Taylor Haizlip, President of The Ebell of Los Angeles, said: “The Ebell
of Los Angeles is delighted to have established a special link with the distinguished
Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra. With it’s steep history of musical presentations
and performances, The Ebell continues its close alliance with the performing arts
through its new association with this eminent group.”
